Featured Review
.... honestly, this one is one I've known for years and years. but it's also one I've never actually done a formal review on ... and it's a pleasure to do it now.
you'd guess that the first thing one would jump on is the guitar work but you'd be wrong. it's the beat. the song starts with that and in this case, it drives along at a great pace, with excellent kit voicings - good snare riding the top, audible kick all the way, tasty hat work and the tambourine added in does the whole groove great justice!
the next special aspect is the popping bass! it could stand just a little more eq action and compression to bring it fully to the subs but the part is great, it moves the earth under the tune with the right amount of pound and the added feature of some good fret to finger movement.
but it is a guitar song. a guitar showcase! and from the heavy melodic passage of the whole theme to the tasty burning licks of the lead solos and fills - it's all axe lover heaven!
frequently - an instrumental track written solely around a guitar can be rather boring and redundant after just a minute, maybe 2 but this one takes it's idea and runs with it in somewhat imaginative ways, given the repeated theme throughout. the arrangement is well thought out to be sure - bringing air to the mix when the solos take over, giving space when over-saturation may have been the first inclination. smart move to keep the listener involved, not just plodding through in the lead sections - but instead, allowing the rhythm guitars to back off and take a true back seat instead of trying to carry the load when it's time for finger-man to stand centerstage.
it's got the beat - and the groove. it's got the melodic base and the harmonic accentuation. it's got feel and it's got a sense of space and most of all - it's got my attention and it makes me move.
that's good shit. well done. now and then and again tomorrow.
