Day trip to awesome city
Right from the very first second it’s just impossible not to tap instantaneously into this song’s totally awesome groove - and I don’t say ‘awesome’ very often - and feel it in your biological rhythms.
This is achieved by a singularly enlightened partnership between bass and guitar which doesn’t miss a stroke from open to shut, so much so that it’s hard to tell who is leading who. The drums aren’t doing too much, only what’s required, and that was absolutely the right decision.
Surprisingly, the tune also has oodles of space, which makes for a capivating dynamic in spite of the repetition. It doesn’t hang about in the same place and there’s really not a single dull moment. The guitar (yeah, I know – guitars) is as good as a good singer. Actually, better, in this context – only fingers can pack in that many notes.
Definitely not a tune just for guitarists, it’s intricately constructed without being over-technical or stiff, and just, well, a good rockin’ thing with funk and a contagious string of melodies.
I do think it could’ve been a just a little shorter than four minutes but then I’m a brevity lover and hey, when the drugs are good who cares if the track’s on repeat?
I’ve got a lot of respect for the talent exhibited here, and the really cool thing is that they’ve definitely made it about the song and not the singer.
Amen to that, and it’s a classic track.
