a slow drive down a hard road

Can't Say Sugarstick

hmmmmm .... pretty odd that I seem to have happened on to 2 singers that bear a strange resemblance to each other and a certain coned tit presence of the past musical history books ....

still - despite THAT and the fact that this is probably a better song than much of what came out of that hit factory - the song has lows and highs.

one low is that the overall mood of the song seems somewhat strained and almost dragging its own ass across the sound floor ... as if it needs to be a few BPM faster. but at the same time, I like the meter and syncopation of the vocal line. so maybe if the drummer had gone for more 32nd notes and an extra snare per measure - it'd feel more married to the melody.

not sure I entirely love the droning low end bass pad synth sound throughout and the song might have been stronger if it had been utilized a bit more sparingly - partially cus it seems to drown out any actual real bass that might be present in the song.

like the last song in this review pair, this one also uses a wide variety of electronic atmosphere in it's sound bed ... giving the song a large and 'bigger than what it is' feel.

I sorta dig the various synth/guitar sounds that come and go and fill out the room the song slow dances in but once again - like th e last song, I'm not entirely sure the occasional guitar entry is completely ticking my hard rocker buttons much but the chorus super saturation has to be partly successful cus of it and the outro guitar is the strongest moments of the presentation.

vocals are pretty strong but lack a bit of adventure in the range department and isn't entirely made up for by the likable and somewhat diverse choice of notes in the melody. but the easy female voice is accessible and knows it's comfort zone and where it sounds good and that is, in part, what makes a good pop song. so no faulting that aspect - at least not much. story line seems to be a bit of a love song or at least talk of the beast and that won't go wrong as long as the words flow nicely with the melody and on that - it's a go.

so - it's strong. but ends up being an afterthought song for the band if they have a bit hookier and more second helping songs available (which it sounds as if they may).

I wonder if this band is on the way up or living in indie purgatory?
