4ohm into 8ohm cab?

Postby `McTooT The Bat » Sat Jan 23, 2010 4:05 pm

Alright chaps,

After an enforced absence (see the grovelling explanation on the Yamaha SG Thread) I'm back in the land of the 'living' - at least until Monday - and am yet again obsessing about the acquisition of more guitar-related kit (GAS is a genetically inherited problem). My next little project is to sort out a 1X12 extension cab to run my little Champ 600 into. Problem is it's a 4ohm amp and there are v few 4ohm 12" speakers on the market. I can only find one old stock Celestion and one by a british outfit called Trayden - any suggestions?

Failing that does anyone know if it would be fine to run the Champ into an 8ohm speaker? I am hopelessly dim when it comes to all the techy electronics speak (hell, when I was 14 my physics teacher advised me to leave the subject and never return so the writing was on the wall from an early age).

Apologies if I was rude in not following through on the SG thread. I shall try to be more dilligent.

BTW - loved the Refugee collaboration: Somewhere somehow, someboday must've kicked you around some....

No such thing as "just a 4 ohm amp" It will handle loads down to a little less than 4 ohms but up to around 16 ohms.

If you simply put a resistor on the 8 ohm speaker you will have a 4 ohm speaker.

When a speaker say's its 4 ohms that means the impedance is an avarage of 4 ohms.

simple rule of thumb on this.

if your amp has a 4 ohm output, you can run any cab that is 4 ohms or LARGER.

however, you will not get the maximum power output into a larger load than specified.

most times, it doesn't matter.

Simple advice is the kind I need! Thanks a lot. Much appreciated.
