The Tremendous Pressure Being Placed on Artists Today...

Postby Chris K. » Sat Jan 29, 2011 12:10 am

This is an interesting article and accompanying video - the video is from MIDEM... and is 45 mins long - so grab a brew, smoke a bowl, pop some corn, and let the dog out ;)

The Tremendous Pressure Being Placed on Artists Today...

When you talk to artists and people that work with artists, they very rarely talk about tools. Because they know, this is their business. They know that it works best when the tools disappear. If you have a great connection with a fanbase on a particular platform, it's not about that platform - it's not about Twitter - it's about your conversation with your audience and your relationship with your fans.

"So, why then is there a glut of tools, why is there so much conversation about the tools? Well, it's obviously about the money, it's about the investment. In any industry, you're talking about - and investing in and focusing on, on stages like this one - the opportunities for growth. And there's been such catastrophic decline in the traditional music business, the infrastructure is so badly broken, that we're turning over every rock looking for opportunities to grow something to replace it. And as a result, there's tremendous pressure on artists.

"I mean we're asking so much of artists. And when you talk to them and you talk to the teams that work with them, they do feel put upon, they do feel overwhelmed, they do feel that the expectations are so high. Because they are supposed to rise up - we have this expectation that there's this revolution going on, where they are supposed to rise up and replace what was lost. And I don't know that that's a meaningful expectation or a reasonable expectation for us to be putting on independent artists and the people that represent them."

Eric Garland, CEO, BigChampagne during the opening panel at Midem. The complete session video ...

sorry chris i didnt watch the vid but I think the world is all about people and what takes them away.. and they can get lost in.. and forget their troubles for a while. Music, concerts, really, not the internet.. it's too interactive.. Just watching and listening anything that sounds good, looks good, tastes good, feels good, and is good, for them.. to immerse themselves for awhile. And forget the world. The music biz iz just crunching numbers and profits. sucks. for me.

the point is that it isn't about the tools, it's about the relationships that artists have with their fanbase, regardless of the platform. more music is being consumed today than at any time in history - but at what cost, to whom? there are so many platforms today, it's overload. too many. and too many who think that the platform is the answer to their success - when it isn't. I preach this all the time here locally --- if you're not engaged in a very personal and direct way with your fans, the music falls on deaf ears.

When a train goes through a tunnel and it gets dark, you don't throw away the ticket and jump off. You sit still and trust the engineer.
